Still no news on my employment front. Still waiting. But the extended nature of this problem has led me to make one decision. Well I really had no choice in the matter. I'm not going home for Christmas. This will be the first time in my entire life that I don't spend Christmas with my family. I can't even imagine what it will be like.
The other day I had a craving for soft ginger cookies. As I pulled a batch out of the oven the smell of them made me cry. They reminded me of home at Christmas and it just made me really sad because I knew that I would not be going home for Christmas nor the remainder of this year.
The truth is even if I had a job right now I wouldn't pay the inflated prices that the airlines are charging. It's a one and a half hour flight and they are already charging $700 (that includes the taxes) That is ridiculous! I could fly to the UK and Europe for that amount! For the last two years I've been finding it absolutely appalling that it costs me more to fly within my own country than it does to fly to other countries. I refuse to pay that.
If I had a car I'd contemplate driving despite the fact that mother just about had a heart attack when I mentioned it. She said "You don't drive that highway alone in winter!" So I suppose even if I could drive home then I wouldn't. I know that from this point on the cost of airfare will only go up. By December the tickets will be worth $1000. I love my family and I miss them terribly but I'm not paying $700-1000 to fly home for a couple of days Christmas or not. My sister Kathryn will be in the same, if not worse spot since she's way out west.
I'm also extremely pissed off at WB for moving the release date of Harry Potter to July of next year. The reasons that they give the press aren't the truth of course. I have two thoughts on why this was done.
The first isn't as important but it was a thought that if they do it this way there won't be as long a wait between Half-Blood Prince and the first installment of the Deathly Hallows.
The second reason is the one I think that is more likely. The actors still haven't settled their contract and I think they are probably plotting to go on strike in the fall. The fall would have more impact than the summer because no one watches TV as much in the summer.
If this is the case and they do go on strike the movie studios want to make sure they have something left on their slate to release come summer because nothing will be in production. Harry Potter is a money sucker no matter when it's released so they are going to save it for summer so they have something that will bring in the money.
I like movies but I pretty much despise the mechanics and deviousness of the movie business. The don't actually care about their audience they only care about how they can manipulate that audience into spending more money.
